Training for Improvement in Brick Sector

In a move towards improving situation of the brick industries in Nepal a five day Training on Natural Draught Zigzag Kilns 16 - 21 March 2013 has been jointly organized by Federation of Nepalese Brick Industries (FNBI) and Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries – Energy Efficiency Centre (FNCCI -EEC). The training with main objective to develop local capacity by providing exposure to the cleaner clay fired brick production technologies, specifically Natural Draught Zigzag firing technology was supported by Nepal Energy Efficiency Programme (NEEP)/ GIZ.  Four brick sector experts from India facilitated the training participated by 40 participants representing FNBI, district affiliates of FNBI, consultant and research institutions related to brick sector and individuals, on the working, operation and maintenance of the technology as well as retrofitting of existing Fixed Chimney Bull Trench Kilns (FCBTK) to Zigzag kilns. During the period, the experts have also conducted energy audits in three brick units within Kathmandu valley. The training has been organized under the keen initiative of FNBI with objective to improve the energy efficiency of the member units with fixed chimney type kilns as a baseline study conducted by NEEP earlier identified the sector as one of the energy intensive sectors. It is estimated that there are 700 brick kilns in operation across Nepal out of which 500 are officially registered.
